F&H Cares Presents Donation to CBIRT

Lorie Thur Katz and Jeffrey Katz, owners of Fabrics and Home, presented a donation to The Center on Brain Injury Research and Training (CBIRT) in July 2025 as part of the company’s philanthropic initiative, F&H Cares.

The donation is part of a company mission to aid school-aged children impacted by one of the 13 disabilities listed in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Fabrics and Home gives 25 cents per yard for each yard sold from fabrics purchased on our website to a charity. Through this initiative, Fabrics & Home hopes to provide students, families, teachers and staff impacted by a disability with resources and support.

What is CBIRT?

CBIRT, a center under the Department of Psychology at the University of Oregon, seeks to help children and adults with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Fabrics and Home applauds their work with this yearlong partnership and donation.

"The idea is that we screen all the kids that are justice involved for brain injury," explained Melissa McCart, director of CBIRT. “Then what we do is we have a school liasion that works with the school probation officers and the officers in general to create a plan for that child to go back to school” with the support they need to succeed.

Other populations CBIRT works with include individuals with TBI; family members, educators and other professionals who serve individuals with TBI; hospitals; and research colleagues.

What is F&H Cares?

F&H Cares started in 2019. Thur Katz, who has worked with children with disabilities for more than 15 years, developed the philanthropic initiative with the intent of widening her impact on organizations that support the 13 disabilities impacting school-aged children and their families. Fabrics & Home randomly chooses one of 13 disabilities from IDEA. "Last year we were glad to support CBIRT and thank them for all their hard work they do for children and families," said Thur Katz.
