The 91-year-old House of Scalamandré offers a legacy in creating luxurious interior design, featuring fabrics, wallcovering, furniture, lighting and more. The design company contains 13 fabric and wallcovering brands, two furniture lines and a lighting division. You might recognize their offspring, which include Old World Weavers, Grey Watkins, Boris Kroll and Hinson.
Franco Scalamandré, an immigrant who left Italy in 1923 as Mussolini rose to power, started the company after coming to America and working an assortment of jobs - from draftsman to design teacher.
He began manufacturing in Patterson, New Jersey, with just one weaver and a loom, and by 1929, Scalamandré moved operations to a brick mill in Long Island City. And as people say ... the rest is history.
