Get Your Best Backyard - Here's How to Optimize Your Space

More than three quarters of Americans (76 percent) say that the family backyard is one of the most essential parts of the home, according to a Harris Poll, commissioned by the TurfMutt Foundation. It’s so important that 72 percent say a big yard tops the wish list when looking for a new home.

"What we are seeing with Americans is greater reliance on the backyard as an extension of the home. It's not just a place that looks pretty – it's a place to live and do daily activities such as working, dining and relaxing," said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the TurfMutt Foundation. "They've discovered that 'backyarding' is a better way to live and there's no turning back."

Here are some tips on enhancing your outside space:

Install an outdoor kitchen or living rooms

These rooms extend your outdoor space and provide extra areas to entertain. Make sure you have adequate counter space, sufficient storage and indoor amenities are not too far away. “Don't forget the comfort amenities like an overhead fan or a fire pit for cooler evenings,” interior designer and furniture expert Shawn Zar recommends. “People often miss adding side tables and cozy lighting, which can make a big difference in ambiance and functionality.”

One challenge in bringing indoor rooms outside lies in achieving seamless design continuity, according to Andrew Griffith, founder of Garden Furniture in the UK. “Transitioning from indoor to outdoor spaces demands careful consideration of disparate materials and aesthetics,” he says. “Outdoor elements must withstand weather exposure, complicating the harmonious blend of design.”

So selecting furniture, textiles and decor that complement both environments requires consideration and planning. You must choose appropriate items that will stand the test of time against the elements. “It's not just about the durability, but also about maintaining the style and comfort we're used to indoors,” Zar offers. He suggests looking for materials like plastic (resin) and aluminum since they won’t wear out fast.

Try segmenting your yard, sectioning off gardens and play areas

Effectively sectioning your yard involves strategic planning, according to Ben Gold, owner of Recommended Home Buyers. “Define distinct zones for gardening and play areas,” he offers. “Consider factors like sunlight, soil quality and safety when planning these sections.”

When dividing your yard, Zar says, you should also think about the view from inside your house. “Each section should feel like a natural extension of your indoor space.”

Also, consider where the sun's path goes. After all, you want your outdoor dining area shaded during peak hours, says Zar. Always factor in the flow of movement, too, you want to ensure there's a clear path for guests to navigate through the different zones.

Use the same insight when arranging your garden and play areas. Consider the practical factors along with the trends. For instance, raised planters provide perspective and are popular. Play areas should feature a soft, resilient ground cover that cushions falls but also looks natural in its surroundings.

“Homeowners should consider their lifestyle, the needs of their family and the overall aesthetic they want to achieve,” adds Gold. “Each section should harmonize with the others, creating a cohesive and enjoyable outdoor space.”

Always consider lighting

Lighting makes all the difference. For a snug, inviting feel you want the right lights above your head. “Think of those cute string lights that you can string up easily” said Zar. They throw off a nice, soft light that's perfect for chilling out in the evenings.”
